Rocket Holborn: Restaurant Review

I have a personal connection to the London restaurant Rocket, as ten years ago my office used to look into the original venue’s open dining room, across the gorgeous Mews of Lancashire Court in Mayfair. More often than I’d like to admit we succumbed to the scent of fresh pizza and ordered a special delivery across the courtyard.

So when the chance to try the upmarket chain’s newest venture in Holborn arose, I rocketed at the chance.

As I remembered the excellent cocktails of Rocket’s original Mayfair bar, I decided to sample the mixology menu once again. I wasn’t disappointed – the signature ‘Gavi Reviver’ – Hendricks, Gavi di Gavi, Cointreau, maraschino syrup & fresh lemon juice – was spot on the mark and the perfect pick-me-up for a Thursday evening. My friend’s ‘Elderflower Caipirinha’, off the twisted classic menu – Velho Barreira Cachaça, elderower cordial with a whole fresh lime & sugar – was also delicious.

To start, my seared beef fillet carpaccio, rolled in cracked black pepper was cut a little on the thick side, but tasted great. While my friend’s dish of blue cheese beignets & roasted curried cauliflower seemed an odd combination initially, he assured me it worked well, due to the crispy capers and tahini molasses dressing.

For mains, my grilled lemon & thyme chicken with roasted peanut, coconut & chilli Sauce arrived on a huge salad of new potatoes, mint, baby gem, quails eggs & green beans, which to be honest was slightly too much food to conquer. The flavours worked well together however. And my companion’s harissa lamb, zucchini & sweet potato skewer on cous-cous with red onion, red & yellow peppers was also a hearty, punchy dish.

Having no room left for a pudding each, we opted for the delicate affogato – a combination of Amaretto, espresso & vanilla ice cream with amaretti biscuits. This provided the sweet nibble we both craved, along with a lovely coffee hit to close the meal.

Reasonably priced and staff who couldn’t help you more, I’ll certainly be returning soon to Rocket. Now I wonder if they still deliver pizza?
